The gentleman's sport in the modern-day mobile era

By Todd Wolff

There's surely no doubt that golf is one of the most lucrative and well-known mainstream sports in the world today.

These days, it's been fascinating to see the growing popularity of golf ported over to the constantly evolving world of mobile gaming. For instance, it might come as a bit of a surprise to find out that there are quite a few golf-themed online slots games currently in the market. From Microgaming's Lucky Shot and Argyle Open to Rival Gaming's Hole in Won and The Back Nine, all the way to Playtech's Golden Tour and Play n' Go's Gold Trophy franchise, casino gaming developers have clearly derived a lot of inspiration from the gentleman's sport.

Mobile gaming websites have also associated themselves with golf in some interesting ways. The 2013 edition of the Golf Masters tournament, which ran from April 11 to 14 of that year, was one of the weekly themes of pocket fruity's Fruity Fridays promotions throughout the entire month of April 2013. The Sheffield, England-based mobile slots hub's sizeable user base received multiple opportunities to win both free prizes and virtual Fruity Coins just by sharing and commenting on the weekly Fruity Friday Facebook post. The increasing prominence of state-of-the-art mobile devices like smartphones and tablets has essentially allowed mobile gamers to win cool giveaways no matter where they are.

It's also not uncommon for golf-themed online slots games to include an actual golf simulation as a highly effective way to spice up the expected bonus rounds. The aforementioned Argyle Open has a Tournament Bonus round that's activated by getting three or more golf ball symbols anywhere on the reels. In the Tournament Bonus round, you will be given three strokes to further maximize your potential winnings. For the first stroke, the further you tee off, the greater the coin rewards. The second stroke will be played further down the fairway for another coin reward.

The third stroke involves the player putting the ball on the green. Depending on how close the ball gets to the hole, players will be awarded up to 20 free spins with up to a 5x multiplier.
